Being able to use your favorite grip on either end is a tremendous benefit since even a minor variation in grip can affect the rate of spin or how the knife "flies" as it leaves your hand. Some people must change their grip entirely and some even have to use different knife designs all together when throwing "full" compared to "half" spins, so this design is a fantastic one! ![]() Powder Coated finish makes the smoothest and toughest thrower on the planet Some makers prefer to leave their knives in the "raw" or unfinished state but when it comes to steel you have to worry about rust. One way around this is to clean and oil your knives on a regular basis. (Kind of a pain.) Another way around the rust is to paint the knife, but throwing knives take quite a bit of abuse so the paint comes off pretty easily. John Goss, maker of the Dragon Knives, took this to the next level and decided to have his knives "powder coated". Powder Coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish. The powder used is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto the knife. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish. What all of this means for you is a smooth release, durable coating and no cleaning, oiling or rust to worry about on your knives! The design measures 13 1/2" in length and is 3/16" thick. It weighs 11oz or about 310 grams. Thats plenty of weight and length to give you complete control and maximum penetrating power! You won't have to worry about knives falling out of your target or "floating" away from the point of aim because they are too light and got "caught" in the wind. Although they can be thrown by the handle or the blade, I prefer to throw this design by the blade. It just feels perfect as it leaves my hand! I throw a 1/2 spin from 8 feet, 1 1/2 spins from 15 feet and 2 1/2 spins is about 21-22 feet for me. - S. Gracia Why These Knives Are Guaranteed to Last a Lifetime It takes about 14 hours from start to finish to complete 1 Dragon Knife. These knives go through a 3 step tempering process: The 1st step in the tempering process, is to harden the knives to their max. This first "baking" of the knives aligns the carbon fibers in the steel, making it harder. (If you stopped at this point your knives would be too brittle. They would break for sure). The 2nd time in the oven, the knives are Baked Under 11 Tons of Pressure! Sometimes the steel likes to twist or bend from the high temperatures in the oven. To guarantee a perfectly straight thrower, the knives are stacked in piles of 100, compressed under 11 tons of pressure, and then baked again. The 3rd and final step brings the knives to exactly 50 Rockwell. 50 Rockwell is just about the perfect hardness for a thrower. If it were any harder it would break. If it were any softer it would bend. ![]() Here are just a few reasons why these knives are better than the cheaper "floater" knives being sold:
