NOTES FROM COMPETITORS "Hey Gang, This years tournament turned into such a great event! We had 62 throwers and I would guess another 30 spectators. I'm told that's the biggest tournament that anyone has ever heard of. We found several things this year that we need to do a little different to help make next year's tournament better but I hope everyone had a great time. We have already started planning for next year. I want to thank everyone for all the help they gave in making the tournament so enjoyable. We could not have done this without all the wonderful people who make up this knife throwing family. Thanks again everyone!" Bill Page - Event Promoter Kuk Sool Won Martial Arts Center Feathers and Steel Throwing Club IKTHOF Member (Alabama) --------------------------------------------------------------------- "It was fantastic! I got to watch the first person ever break 200 in a knife event and the first person ever to break 90 in a hawk event!" Todd Abrams (aka Jack Dagger) IKTHOF Member (California) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Here Ed is talking about getting beat by Linda Brown, a good friend.) "I always say you get what you deserve and knife throwing shows exactly that. Linda worked harder then I did and she kicked my sorry butt, so did Rudd Pickett, the 30 year old midget who lies and says he's only like 12 years old, and also my dear friend AWOL (aka Cliff Hill) who did an amazing job of improving beyond anything I've ever seen in a newbie! I got to see Bob Pyle throw a 210 in a tournament and while doing that saw him throw 5 bullseyes from a 1/2 spin, and then immediately stick 5 bullseyes from the 1 spin distance! As far as I could find out that has never been done before in an event. I got to see AWOL stand up there in 3rd place next to Alamo Bainton & Old Dog Pyle on his THIRD TOURNAMENT!!! I got to see 12 year old Rudd Pickett out throw all but the top 10 male throwers including me! Look out guys - he's coming fast! I got to see a tiny little guy (whose name I can't remember) stick 5 knives in a row at 1/2 spin while Linda Brown told him which round to hit. He was 7- SEVEN - years old! I was scoring and I know my face had a grin as big as the sun while seeing that! When I was seven I was barely able to feed myself! :-) My hat is off to you all - but next time I'ma comin' for yawl!" :-) Ed Imperatore Knife Maker IKTHOF Member (New Jersey) --------------------------------------------------------------------- "There's no doubt, between Mike 'Alamo' Bainton and Joe 'Brokenfeather' Darrah lies an infinite amount of information to improve YOUR SKILL and ACCURACY, and they give all of it free of charge and just like most of us newcomers I owe all of my improvements to these two very generous brothers of the knife. There's just one catch-----you have to listen-----then make changes... All that's left is practice." Cliff 'AWOL' Hill IKTHOF Member (Indiana) --------------------------------------------------------------------- "My son Taylor (aka Q-tip) was still grinning when he went to bed last night. He was beat but had a blast. He really enjoyed throwing with Rudd and is now gunning for him. I told him he had some catching up to do. He agreed with me that this is a great group. Thanks again!" Number of spins and distances are ½ spin (8 ft.), 1 spin (11 ft.), 1½ spins (15 ft.), 2 spins (18 ft.), and 2½ spins (21 ft.). The above are "minimum distances". Tomahawk Throwing - All categories will throw 5 tomahawks at 5 targets, 3 times per distance for a total of 45 tomahawks (135 possible points). Distances are 1 spin, 1 and a half spins, and two spins. Junior Division (10 and younger) Knife Throwing - 5 knives at 5 targets, 3 times per distance at ½ & 1 spin for 30 knives. Tomahawk Throwing - 5 tomahawks at 5 targets, 2 times per distance at 10 ft. Women's Division (16 and older) & Youth Division (11 to 15 years old) Knife Throwing - 5 knives at 5 targets, 3 times per distance at ½, 1, 1 ½, and 2 spins. Tomahawk Throwing - 5 tomahawks at 5 targets, 3 times at 1 spin. Sudden Death Qualifier (Men’s Division Only) All adult male throwers will throw five weapons from ½, 1, 1½, 2, and 2½ spins. Scores will then be tallied and divided into three groups Advanced, Intermediate and Novice. SCORING Targets will be approximately 16 inches in diameter, with an inner ring of 8 inch diameter and a 2½ inch bulls eye. Weapons will be scored "as they stick" with a mandatory 5 seconds in target in order to count as stuck. Bulls eyes will be counted as 3 points, weapons penetrating the inner ring as 2 points and all other areas of the target round as 1 point. Weapons stuck in the backboard of the target will not count nor will a weapon stuck in the target by anything other than its intended point. The point of the weapon must penetrate the target in order to count, and the highest ring penetrated by the weapon will be the score. After a thrower has finished their turn, a range official will approach the targets and call out the scores as they determine they exist. The score keeper will record the score and then the thrower will be allowed to retrieve their weapon. If the range officer cannot determine the score, they will call for another official to confer with over the score. Their decision is final and will be carefully considered to ensure a fair and accurate tournament. OVERALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS Scores will be tabulated by combining competitor scores from each weapon category excluding sudden death and qualifiers. Ties will be broken by a sudden death competition, one round of five weapons from each distance, (distance determined by division).
