The Pro Balance Thrower!
Made by Cold Steel

Cold Steel throwing knife NEWLY RELEASED!!! A Wicked Design from the Good Ol' Days!
This knife takes inspiration from a 1950’s classic designed by Harry McEvoy, a true pioneer of our sport. We know you’ll love the reasonable price and professional style of the Pro Balance Throwing Knife.

'Back in the day' (the past 10 years or so) there were 2 places you could get throwing knives. You could either buy the smaller 'floaters' off of Ebay, or have a custom maker make you a set. The 'custom' throwers were usually fantastic! But it is time consuming and boring making one knife at a time and the prices reflected that point. (Imagine paying an artist to paint you 200 identical pictures! Oh yeah and I need 200 more next month. They'd go crazy :-)

This may just be another new throwing knife on the market to some of you, but this is a little more than that. Until now the bigger companies only focused on designing and selling the cheaper/smaller throwing knives. I'm guessing this was because most people were not ready to shell out a decent amount of money for a hobby they weren't sure they even enjoyed. (Makes sense to me!) So most people would spend $10 to $15 on a few knives from Ebay or similar sites instead of spending $25 to $100 for one decent 'custom' made throwing knife.

The problem with those smaller knives are that they harder to stick. And when you throw a knife 20 times and have to bend down to pick it up off the ground 16 of those times... the hobby just isn't that cool and people might get a little frustrated, and stop throwing. The bigger knives are easier to see in the air, easier to control, and have more weight to them that helps bury the point in the target.

The great news with the release of this knife is that there now seems to be enough interested people in the sport for the bigger companies to start listening and coming out with larger/better throwing knives.

Durable Powder Coat finish makes one smooth and tough thrower

Some makers prefer to leave their knives in the "raw" or unfinished state but when it comes to carbon steel you have to worry about rust. One way around this is to clean and oil your knives on a regular basis. (Kind of a pain.) Another way around the rust is to paint the knife, but throwing knives take quite a bit of abuse so the paint comes off pretty easily.

The designers took this to the next level and decided to have these knives "powder coated". Powder Coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish. The powder used is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto the knife. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish. The Pro Balance throwers are made from sturdy 1055 Carbon steel. They have a black, weather resistant powder coat finish and are equipped with replaceable composite handle scales. These throwing knives are ready to endure all that you can dish out.

The Pro Balance Throwers have a baked-on finish. This coating is applied to the entire knife. It is tough and serves to protect the carbon steel from the elements. Over time and with use, the coating will scratch. This is normal wear. When it occurs it is necessary to take a little more care to ensure that the blade does not rust. To do this, just make sure that the blade is cleaned and lightly oiled after use.

This knife measures 13.25 inches in length and is 5mm thick. It weighs 16.5 ounces or about 462 grams. That is more than enough weight and length to give you complete control and all of the penetrating power you could ask for! You won't have to worry about knives falling out of your target or "floating" away from the point of aim because they are too light and got "caught" in the wind.

For a limited time, you can buy these amazing throwers for only $26.95 each. Order 4 knives and get the 5th knife absolutely FREE!!!

Whats so special about 1055 Carbon Steel?

1055 steel is right on the border between a medium and a high carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.50%-0.60% and with manganese between 0.60%-0.90% as the only other component.

The carbon content and lean alloy make this a 'shallow hardening steel' with a quenched hardness between Rc 60-64 depending on exact carbon content. These combination of factors make this one of the toughest steels available because when quenched, you avoid the brittleness of higher carbon materials.

This steel is particularly suited to applications where strength and impact resistance is valued above all other considerations and will produce blades of almost legendary toughness. (Sounds like a great steel for a throwing knife! :-)

The final step is a precise heat treatment sequence that was developed by Cold Steel. This heat treatment process is one of Cold Steels most highly guarded trade secrets. It was arrived at over several years by using an exhaustive series of practical and metallurgical tests and observations. Overall, they believe that attention to detail in every phase of the manufacturing process is the primary reason for the superiority of Cold Steels blades.

What this means for you is a smooth release, durable coating and less cleaning, oiling or rust to worry about on your throwing knives!

What’s more, due to their tough 1055 Carbon Steel construction and durable finish, these knives will last for hundreds of tournaments or shows. And to make your job even easier, Cold Steel has incorporated a strong yet very sharp sure-stick point into their design that guarantees a hard hit and superb penetration when the point hits the target!

knife throwing with cold steel

Here are just a few reasons why these knives are better than other cheaper "floater" knives being sold:
  • The Pro Balance Throwing Knives are heavy! They can be thrown farther without losing direction even from major wind resistance. Lighter "floaters" tend to float away from the point of aim

  • The Pro Balance Throwing Knives have great penetrating power due to their weight. This will help drive your knives into the target and help them stay in long enough to be scored when competing

  • The Pro Balance Throwing Knives are longer. This gives you more control of your knife because there is more knife to hold on to and more to watch fly thru the air. Smaller knives are harder to see when they are hitting the target

  • With bigger knives you can see how the knife hits the target, so you will know which adjustments to make if the knife didn't stick. Either move forward a bit or move back a bit.

  • The Pro Balance Throwers are TOUGH. Cheaper knives can bend, crack and even break after some abuse. These knives are virtually indestructible!

  • Many "floaters" aren't heavy enough to cut through the air which means you have to throw them harder. These throwing knives can be "lobbed" at the target and they will have no problem sticking. This makes a 3 hour throwing session possible and saves lots of unnecessary "wear-and-tear" on your shoulder and elbow.
