The head of the Frontier Hawk is drop forged out of 5150 steel and coated black and believe me it is TOUGH! The cutting edge is differentially heat treated, and its blade is 3.5 inches wide, and sharp, for excellent scoring and penetration. *************************************************************************************** DESIGN IMPROVEMENT - 12/19/04 Cold Steel has just upgraded their Frontier Hawk design! Before the head was just slid on to the handle and pounded on with a few quick raps. It was then held in place only by the snug fit. So every few throws you had to give it a few more raps to tighten the fit. But now they've added an allen head "set screw" that goes through the back of the hawk head and screws in until its "snug" against the handle. This is a great improvement because now you don't have to worry about the head loosening up or coming off after a few throws. And if it loosens up, all you do is grab your allen wrench and give the set screw a twist! ****************************************************************************************** 
The handle is made from straight grained Hickory wood and is 19 inches in length. The complete hawk weighs approximately 1 lb, - 4 ounces and it throws beautifully! The handle is so smooth the hawk just glides right out of your hand! Whether you want to throw at your favorite log round, or chop some firewood, this hawk will work great!
