My throwing buddies and I used to play a game modeled on The Walk Down Main Street, a pistol-shooting competition. It can be a lot of fun, but PLEASE be careful if you decide to try it. Two throwers with one or more sheathed knives apiece take position with their backs against the face of the target. They begin to walk slowly away from the target, keeping abreast. A third person shouts "Go!" when the players are a safe distance from the target, usually about twelve feet. The players whirl, draw knives, and begin throwing at the target. The goal is to stick the greatest number of knives in a designated aiming point faster than your competitor--each player has his/her own aiming point, to avoid clashing knives. You can score by elapsed time--faster time wins--and/or by accuracy--higher score wins. But watch out! Excitement builds fast, throwing gets hasty even though the distance to the target is not fixed, and two people standing side by side flinging sharp objects can be a menace to each other. There'll be a lot of ricochets at first, and bystanders should keep well back--and alert! A calmer version of this game involves a single thrower and a single starter. The thrower positions himself at his preferred throwing distance, sheaths his knives, and turns his back while the starter tapes several small paper aiming marks to different places on the target. Each mark is numbered in series: 1, 2, and 3 if three knives are to be thrown, etc. The starter retreats to a safe distance and then calls "Go!" The thrower turns, draws, and begins throwing, attempting to hit the aiming marks in numbered order. Again, scoring can be for both time and accuracy. I confess that we used to play some risky knife games in days of auld lang syne, and The Walk was not the craziest one. But it can be made a safe game with a little care. As a make-believe martial art--always the best kind--it's rip-roarin' FUN! It's free, and there's no obligation. |
