Throwing and Filming in Pittsburgh, PA.
The following pictures were taken in a town in Pennsylvania in the
beginning of November, 2003. My knife throwing buddy, Dave Fettig,
and I got invited to PA to throw some knives and to get him on tape
doing a butterfly knife routine (aka balisong knives).
Here is Dave standing in front of Gary Draper's indoor range,
right after we hung up some new targets... they sure look nice.
Too bad it never lasts :-) The new logs were from Joe Darrah, (whatta guy!).
We decided to hang the new logs because we destroyed the logs that
were up when we got there. What started out as log "rounds" ended up being more
like log "triangles". Chunks of wood were falling all over the place... it was
niice :-)
Above we have Joe Darrah, Gary Draper, and Gary's friend Jack
discussing what and how to film. I guess you can call it a "Behind the
Scenes" picture.
Here is "the crew" along with Dave warming up in front of the camera.
Here Dave is doing some finger twirls and getting ready to start
filming some aerial work.
Here is one of Dave's aerials... its awesome to see it happen up
close! The knives move so smoothly when Dave has them in his hands,
but the next thing you know, there is razor sharp steel spinning
in the air next to his face, and then he reaches out and catches it and
keeps the flow moving! And I wasn't kidding, Dave practices with EXTREMELY
sharp knives! (Notice the bandaids on his fingers). He thinks its the best
way you learn to respect the blade. (As Steve Irwin would say... "stay away
from the bitey end!")
Here are Joe Darrah and his son Shane spending some "quality time" on
the throwing range. I've known Joe for a couple years now but this was
the first time I got to meet Shane. And now I see where Joe gets his sense of
humor from :-)
Here is Jack, Gary's friend who was kind enough to
bring over some very nice lighting equipment. Jack says he
doesn't throw too often but you're looking at the first set of knives he
threw from 12 feet! Not too shabby if ya ask me!
From left to right are Bruce Reisner, Joe Darrah, Scott Gracia,
Gary Draper and Dave Fettig. Just a group of guys who felt like traveling
a few hundred miles to throw some knives and share some stories. This picture
makes it look like one of us is about to burst into flames! It was either
caused by our "glowing personalities"... or the 500 watt light that was
only a few feet away... I'll let you decide :-)
Dave and I drove 19 hours that weekend, but we got to hang out and throw for
about 10 hours so it was well worth it! It was a great weekend and I look
forward to throwing knives, or bull, with all of them very soon! Thanks much
for the hospitality Draper! And like I always say... knife throwers really
are great people to meet!
Beware of flying metal!!!
