A Day At The Hurlathon!!! by Daniel Clark The Hurl-A-Thon was more fun than I deserve to have. Lee put on a terrific event with good food, good company and, of course, great throwing (even if the targets were "rustically" painted). I found the most interesting aspect of the competition to be the qualifying rounds. I threw poorly in the knife qualifier and ended up in the Intermediate group only to follow it up with a score that would have won second place in the Master's group. The funny thing is that I couldn't have been happier because I get a 1st place trophy instead of a 2nd place one and I won an engraved 1st place throwing knife donated by Joe Darrah. Thanks Joe, it makes a really swell award. In the Hawk qualifier Rick pulled out a 41 to send Micah to the Intermediate group with me. It's tough to get in the Master's group when there are only three spots! But again this turned out great. Micah and I had a lot of fun competing head to head. We were exactly tied going into the last 20 hawks at two spins. It was tough, but Micah pulled it out and beat me by 10 points. If I had known he had that much left in him I would've put down my beer. If Rick had thrown 2 points less in the Qualifier, Micah would have ended up third in the Master's and I would have locked up the 1st place intermiate spot. I'm telling you, those qualifying rounds are the wild cards in these events. I want to take a second to tell you all to keep your eye out for our new comrade Todd Abrams. This guy hasn't been able to practice consistantly in years and he was still able to shake off the rust and put up some very attractive numbers. He threw even better the following day. He is also a real nice guy. Micah and I relentlessly ribbed him all weekend and he took it all in stride. I look forward to throwing with him again and worry about competing against him in the future. Thanks to Matt for the excellent Atlatl lessons, I'm definitely going to try and make one. Finally, thanks to everyone involved for all the fun and keep practicing 'cause here comes the San Diego Chuckers. Aloha, "Dano" Clark "You've got your problems; I've got my Bowie knife."
