1. What's New

Hello Everyone!

Its a beautiful day outside so I think I'm finally going to get to try out my new "rope dart" that I got from my good friend Joe Darrah. Its a "dart" that doesn't have any flights on the back end of it. Instead it is attached to about 12 feet of rope/cord on the back of the dart and if you "throw" it correctly, the rope creates enough drag to keep the point forward as it flies so it sticks in your target.

You don't really throw it though. What you do is let a few feet of rope hang out of your hand with the dart on the end. Then hold on to the rope and start spinning it (almost like a cowboy and a lasso). At a certain point you just let the rope/dart slide out of your hand (make sure you hold on to the other end though) and if it is done correctly, the dart will fly to the target and stick! But I have a feeling its not going to be that easy... I'll let you know how it goes :-)

EVENT RESULTS
A good friend of mine named Carl Geddes has been sponsoring an event at his home for the past few years. The event is called "The Chucker", named after Chuck Fogarty from Syracuse, Indiana. (His info is listed under the LOCAL THROWERS page). Every year the event seems to grow thanks to the dedication of the people involved and this year was no different. Pictures and results from The Chucker 2004 held in San Diego, California can be found here:

2. GUEST COLUMN

This story was originally posted 2 or 3 years ago on the "Thrower" list which is located in Yahoo's Message Groups. This is a true story of an adventure with a horse while trying to work on a target...

HORSES AND KNIFETHROWERS
by Chuck Fogarty

A while back I went to my daughter & son inlaws indoor horse arena where my target is located, planning to do some repair work on the tree rounds that are getting chewed up. I also have an outdoor target there.

They had told me that a horse or two might be turned out in the arena but that since I wasn't throwing, it wouldn't bother them-- How right they were!

There was just 1 horse in the arena. A friendly giant named Page whose shoulder was even with the top of my head which measures 6 feet from the ground. I had trouble getting into the arena since the entrance (which was about 10 feet inside the door) was secured by ropes to contain the horses.

Page greeted me by standing in front of the ropes and nuzzling me and making it difficult to climb thru the ropes and enter. I finally pushed him out of the way and got in readying my tools. I dropped 2 of the small tree rounds on the floor and Page started eating the bark on one and stomping on the other with his front hoof.

As I tried to drill a hole in one of the rounds he had his giant head actually touching the drill as he checked it out. Then as I tried to work I felt him nuzzling my ear and actually pulling on my jacket. I pushed him out of the way and he would walk about 6 feet and come right back. I felt a pull on the drill and he had picked up the extension cord in his teeth and kind of dared me to take it away which I finally did. Later I found out that if he had bitten thru the cord it would have meant instant death from electric shock. I had to sit down when I heard that one!

I then laid a tomahawk on the floor to do some cutting on the rounds and Page picked it up by the handle and was swinging his head from side to side. I thought he was going to throw it and probably would have done better than I did yesterday in a session with the Hawks. He then bumped my drill case knocking it behind a partition wall and completely out of reach.

On all fours trying vainly to reach the drills I felt a tug and there was Page standing there with my cap in his teeth. "You win you big mope" I said, tho I think I was calling the wrong one of us mope. I packed up my tools and beat a hasty retreat having accomplished nothing and out a nice set of drills but I don't know when I've enjoyed an hour more than I did that one.
