VARIATIONS IN THROWING TECHNIQUE
by Ed Sackett

The overhand throw comes naturally, and uses muscles that are well adapted to the task. But other kinds of throws are possible, sometimes useful, and a lot of fun.

THE UNDERHAND THROW
The underhand throw was once traditional among backwoodsmen and westerners. For this throw, face the target as for conventional overhand throwing. The knife can be gripped by the blade or handle in the conventional way, or it can be palmed, i.e., pressed flat against the palm by the thumb (more on palming below).

If you use the first grip, the knife can be released either with the palm facing away from the target, much in the same manner as in overhand throwing, or the entire throw can be made with the palm toward the target.

If you choose the palming grip, the throw and release will be made with the palm toward the target. With a long, sweeping motion, pivoting primarily at the shoulder, pitch the knife underhand at the target, trying for a half or full turn.

This motion imparts much less spin to the knife than an ordinary overhand throw. It's also possible to give the knife a surprising amount of velocity.

THE BACKWARD THROW
Next, and much more difficult, try the backward throw. Paul LaCrosse, a well-known professional, could achieve remarkable accuracy with this throw, performing hair-raising stunts with his huge sixteen-inch knives.

Stand with your back to the target, lean forward slightly, aim by looking backward either over your shoulder or under your throwing arm, and throw in an inverted position.

The late Harry MacEvoy could make this look easy when pushing 80 years of age, so stop complaining that it's too hard.

ANOTHER BACKWARD THROW
For another type of backward throw, stand facing away from the target with your feet planted wide apart, bend double, and throw between your legs. This one takes practice, pard!

THE LIFTED-LEG THROW
An unusual stunt throw, and one that draws an Oh! from onlookers, is the lifted-leg throw. This consists of throwing under one leg with an underhand motion. Try it first with your right leg (if you're right-handed), then with your left leg. You'll find that this throw puts a lot of spin on the knife, so you may need to shorten your distance to the target.

SIDE ARM THROWS
For certain types of cutting stunts, a sidearm throw is needed. In essence, this throw consists more of bending to the side and throwing overhand, but individual styles vary a lot and you'll need to work out your own.

There is a peculiar type of sidearm throw, rarely seen, in which the arm is cocked across the chest and the knife thrown to the side. This might as reasonably be called a backhand throw. It's described as one of the techniques used by the ninja of feudal Japan.

OTHER THROWS
Throwing with the left hand (or the right hand, if you're a southpaw) takes practice, and is usually easier at short distances. After a little left-hand practice, try throwing two knives simultaneously, one from each hand; this double throwing motion, being balanced, is easier than it looks, and is popular with audiences.

Throwing two knives from one hand is a fairly easy stunt throw. Grip the knives, always using a vertical grip, as if they were one, then throw and release them as one. Controlling more than two knives in this way is difficult, but I know you'll try it anyway.
