READERS TIP

CHEAP INDOOR THROWERS
I pass on that I went into a "bargain store" recently and found steak knives on sale for ten-cents each so I stocked up! Saves trotting back and from the target as much compared to if you were only throwing 2 or 3 knives. These throwers work better from closer distances and stick best if you're throwing at softer targets like cardboard or foam.

I'd like to thank everyone for the overwhelming response we've had with our latest video, The Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing. It's fantastic to see so many people committed to improving their throwing ability. Its also gratifying to already be hearing about success stories that the dvd has helped to create!

Are you hungry for more? Keep on reading to get some tips from a top knife maker and thrower. We've run quite a few articles from this guy and there's a reason for it. With over 40 years of throwing experience, he knows what he's talking about!

(Announced in Michael Buffer voice) "We've all heard of him... some of us know him... and others want to be like him!" (Huh?)

"It's JOE DARRAHHH!!!" :-)

Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!!

WHAT'S A GOOD STEEL FOR MAKING A THROWING KNIFE?
By Joe Darrah

There are probably as many different steels being used as makers, but spring steel in the 10 series (1060, 1075, 1084, 1090) are all good spring steels and will hold up pretty well without heat treating as long as you don't overheat the metal in the cutting part of the design.

Lee Fugatt told me 1084 works well for him without treating, and I know Burl Carl has used old leaf springs for knife making which put's him in good company as some of Harry McEvoys first knives were made from leaf springs.

I have tried and used a lot of different steels and recently made some knives out of old saw blades (big circular type) 20 to 25 inches in diameter. You can also use old lawnmower blades that can be had relatively cheaply from a local lawnmower shop. Chain saw bars make a good knife, if you want to make some smaller throwers and don't mind having to bend them back occasionally. You can also get some bar stock welding steel from Home Depot that actually holds up pretty good.

In my opinion the best maker out there today is Jeff Koch from Waterloo, IA. Jeff uses 5160 spring steel for his knives and they look as great as they throw!

After a while you will find a material you prefer to work with and you will learn more as you go.

Stick With It!
