1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello everyone!

The warm weather is slowly coming back! Last week was awesome with temps in the 80's!!!! Saturday was a bit windy, (60 mph gusts!), so I had to use some of Lee's Fugatts knives... the Norse Scramaseax design that weighs over 20oz (575 grams)!

Too windy??? Says who! :)

My landlord Fred stopped over and threw some hawks a few days ago and so did my buddy Scott. Scott has been stopping over quite bit lately to practice. Since we got back from the IKTA event in Phoenix, we've both been on a mission, trying to get out to "the range" as much as possible to practice.

(All you other competitors from the IKTA event are quite the motivators!!! You'll be able to tell just how much when you see us throw next year!)

NEW DESIGNS FROM KOCH KNIVES
Jeff Koch has quite a few great throwers already on the market. (***Like his 16" Zephyr for example). And now he has more on the way!

I got a package the other day with some great new throwing designs in it. One of them was a handle thrower with a "diamond head". Its 14" long and it weighs almost 15oz (417 grams).

This knife throws PERFECT for me at 12' and 18', which is the distance at most events for your 1 and 2 turn throws). So needless to say I will be practicing all Summer long with these knives when throwing FULL turns.

http://throwzini.com/jkoch_diamond.html

He also sent another knife that was a blade only thrower. This knife is 13.5" in length and weighs 14.6oz (415 grams). It has a unique "cross grind" on it to give it a better grip. I also think it may add a little more drag to the knife as it leaves your hand. So it will spin just a 'little' slower than the same knife without the "cross grind".

http://throwzini.com/jkoch_blade.html

Jeff told me he has been trying to create a blade only thrower for the 1/2 turn events at the competitions. He is still playing with a few other ideas and testing the new features but should have the design finalized soon.

I can't wait... I'm looking for another good knife for all the 1/2 turn events :)

Keep up the great work Jeff!

UPCOMING EVENTS
More clubs and more events... WHAT A COUNTRY!

There's another new club that just started! It's called the WFKT (you'll have to keep reading to find out what it stands for :) Their first EVENT is coming up in a few months and a "major cable news network has expressed interest in covering the event."

And there is also a Mountain Man event coming up... the Rocky Mountain Knife & Tomahawk Championships 2001 in Creede, CO.

I can't even begin to tell you how great these events are. I had the greatest time in my life at the contest in Phoenix!

If you love to throw knives then you just have go to an event! Even if you just started throwing, you'll be watching and getting tips from some of the best throwers around! I know you won't regret it :)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

NOTES FROM THE TROPICANA IN LAS VEGAS, PKT 2001
by Rick Lemberg

We had a VERY high turnout with excellent cross-over participation from many of the masters of the western arts in the knife throwing and tomahawk events this week.

We charted over 2,000 throws for the (Club Record) 44 throwers that actually completed the knife\throwing events. We had all participants throw 20 from 12 feet to qualify, cutting to the top 10 for the remaining 20 from 12 foot and then another 40 throws from 18 feet in accordance with AKTA rules, with AKTA sanctioned targets.

We also had our 5th annual Expert's Events: The Speed Throw, our Long Distance Championship, and a new Obstacle Course event involving 10 small targets that had to be cut to finish.

The contest was for fastest time, with a 3 second penalty for each miss. The results are below.

We had a magnificent donation from John Goss & Dragon Knives of Kirkland Washington of 50 custom gold Long Distance throwers with the event commemorated in full printed detail on the handle! These knives were run only in a run of 50 and were given to each participant after their throws.

We had a thrower, Kazu Furuyama, come from Japan with a camera crew, specifically to throw knives with us. He is a master of something I have only read about... never seen...

He throws a rocket fast half turn (with virtually no rotation once it turns briefly after it leaves his hand) from 27 feet with NO arc at all.

Small knives and no arc... he was very impressive!

Our distance event 2nd place was Manuel Schuster from Germany... Calvin Cook, a famous western performer made our finals and threw his full 80... we thank him for his dedication.

In all, we had over a dozen skilled throwers we had never met before and an elite group of "well oiled" participants from the US including David Smith, Lee Fugatt, Larry Czekaj, John Bailey, Rick Lemberg, Carl Geddes, Thomi Hawk and more!

We did interviews for several media groups including the Learning Channel, National Public Radio, The Discovery Channel and Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Quite a turn out!

Che Che White Cloud, the World's Fastest Knife Thrower drove from New York and taught, and inspired throwers the entire 4 days, working at the 2 large throwing ranges all day and giving of himself the entire time.

It was all our pleasure to have him here. We were all rewarded by his effort, and got to cheer as he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2001 by the Wild West Arts Club for his 61 years of professional throwing, at the banquet.

Prince Che Che spoke to the full throng at the awards banquet, and committed to returning next year to perform as the star attraction in the dinner show and continue his efforts to help us preserve the art of knife throwing for future generations.

As I write this, it is 2am, after the banquet, and we are looking forward to open range time all day tomorrow before heading home. This has been a fine week and the largest knife tournament of the 18 I have had the pleasure to be a part of since 1995.

Thank you to all the throwers who participated. I urge you all to make your reservations early for next year as we will work hard to earn more sponsorship and create an event that will set another standard for our sport.

Best Regards,

4. INTRODUCING THE WORLD FEDERATION OF KNIFE THROWERS
by David Adamovich

Fellow throwers,

The following started as an attempt to pull together throwers in the North East region of the US. As the idea progressed so did its scope.

To the best of my knowledge there are quite a few throwing organizations: AKTA, PKT, IKTA, GTA, SCA, RMKTA and the WKTG.

Each has, for the most part, shared membership and events that run throughout the year. The WFKT shall be one more with the intent of promoting competitive throwing.

To help inaugurate our first "happening", a "major cable news network has expressed interest in covering the event."

*I am, therefore, posting the particulars of the WFKT so those interested may begin practicing with a knowledge of the format, events, target specs, etc.

Thank you for your support.

David R. Adamovich

2001 WFKT Championships
The first open World Championship of the World Federation of Knife Throwers, (WFKT), is scheduled to take place in collaboration with the Wild West Arts Conference east coast convention.

It will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 & 22, 2001 at Wild West City in Netcong, New Jersey (approx. 40 miles west of the George Washington Bridge).

There is a $25 cover charge to the WWAC for admission to the theme park ($10 for Sunday only). This $25 fee includes two day admission plus a BBQ on Saturday evening.

There will be a $75 contest fee. ALL CONTEST ENTRY MONEY PLUS ANY SPONSOR MONEY WILL GO DIRECTLY TOWARD TROPHIES, CASH AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES TO 1st THROUGH 3rd PLACE FINISHERS.

Based on an estimated entry of at least 10 contestants the prize fund is estimated at approximately $1,000.

Warm ups will begin Saturday afternoon. The knife and hawk competition will take place Sunday morning and continue until finished.

A lunch break will take place if necessary. There is no fee to join the WFKT and anyone is eligible to compete.

There will be no women's nor novice divisions. All throwers, regardless of age, gender, throwing ability or past experience will compete in an open tournament against each other.

Separate awards will be announced for the highest score at each distance.

There will also be distance knife and hawk events in addition to a speed knife event.

Look forward to seeing you all there!!!
