1. WHAT'S NEW

Hey Hey Hey, Better Throw Somethin' Pointy Today!!!

Hello Folks :)

Its been kinda rainy here the past few days so I have been reminded how much fun it can be to play with smaller "indoor throwers" every once in a while. Lately I've been hanging out in our basement tearing up my cardboard target. The target was made by John Goss of the Dragon Knives company who was nice enough (or crazy enough) to ship it out to me to try out :)

Its 24"X 24" and about 3 1/2" thick. Its made from 15 layers of cardboard that were glued together using spray adhesive. If you want to see some pics of it (before I tore it all up) then just follow this link:

http://www.throwzini.com/indoor_targets.html

Once you're there just click on the link that says CARDBOARD TARGET.

UPCOMING EVENTS
There is a "Rendezvous" event in Pagosa Springs, CO taking place June 21-23, 2002. Click here for more details:

http://www.throwzini.com/pagosa_springs_event_2002.html

There is also another "Rendezvous Event" taking place in Colorado in July. It is the Rocky Mountain Knife and Tomahawk Alliance "MountainMan Challenge 2002".

It should be a great time for everyone who attends! The event is being put on by my good friend Mike Kolisch, King of the mountain men in my book :) For more details on this event just click on the following link:

2. GUEST COLUMN:

CORD WRAPPING YOUR HANDLES
by Greg Watkins

I have figured out a great way to cord wrap a thrower. It is based on what I have learned about the way the Samurai have wrapped their sword handles. I will describe the way as follows:

You must have a hole at the base of the handle that will fit parachute cord doubled. This is the only hole you will need for this style of wrapping. (You should be able to get "para-cord" at a camping or Army surplus store.)

1. First place a length of cord (you must experiment with the length) as in Fig.1, wrapping over the cord in the center.

2. When you have wrapped the whole handle (tightly!), finish it off by using a piece of tape to hold the end tightly up against the handle. (Fig.2) The tape is used only temporarily to hold this inner wrapping.

3. I have removed the inner wrapping in order to show what the outer wrap looks like. Again, everything must be tight. At this point, take another length of cord, (experiment again to find the length. Too long is good as it will be easier to tighten at the end). Fold this cord in half and start it through the hole and back as in Fig.3

4. Pull the cords to the other side and twist the right over the left, pull tight, pull them to the other side and continue in this manner. (Fig.4, 5,6)

Be sure to remove the tape once you lock in the first cord with the Samurai knots.

5. When you get to the end, tie a surgeons knot. This is two hitches, then two more for the second part of the knot. Like a square knot, yet with double hitches. Fig.7, 8

6. Finally pull this knot as tight as you can, using pliers if needed. Cut the ends short to the knot.

Next use a lighter or candle flame to melt the ends of the cord to prevent un-raveling. Also carefully heat the knot with the flame as this also helps lock the knot in.

The wrap works great! The grip is comfortable and you can still do a good throw when the handle is wet. With a little practice you will be wrapping handles in no time at all!

Happy throwing!

4. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 4TH ANNUAL HURLATHON EVENT
by Rick Lemberg

A quick story for you Burl "Underhand Man" Carl fans out there. There are always a few magic moments at every tournament. I had one this year with a high speed (waist high) "bounce catch" during the 18 foot throw that occurred right after the audience had joked about such catches happening before.

The Burl Carl story is even better. Carl Geddes was ribbing Burl just before the event started about his underhand skills. In jest, he opened a mini pocket folder and held it open for Burl to consider whether he could underhand a knife such as this tiny one.

In front of the crowd and without a moments hesitation, Burl calmly took the knife from Carl, turned quickly and immediately threw a perfect UNDERHAND throw from about 14 feet that nailed the target dead on!

The crowd let out a collective gasp and broke into spontaneous applause. It is the stuff that legends are made of!!!

Lee hand made a series of exceptional trophies for the 3 top finishers in knife and hawk events + a fine golden spear lined with beaver fur for our spear champion! Absolutely the most beautiful awards I have seen in dozens of such events.
