1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello folks!

As always things are busy around here. I've been giving quite a few lessons lately and have really been enjoying it! (Spreading the "addiction" is the best part of my job :) I even had someone drive up from Indianapolis last weekend. Now thats dedication!

Carl arrived here about 10:15am and we watched a video on throwing before we headed out to the range. (Watching a good knife throwing video always gets the blood flowin' before a throwing session :)

So we headed outside after a while and started throwing. There was a bit of "clanging" going on at first but then we both learned that Carl is a natural underhand thrower.

He stuck about 9 in a row from 12 feet throwing under hand half spins and we were having a great time! And then he got assaulted by a "rogue bug" that flew right into his eye! (BLAMMY!)

But he recovered quickly and we kept on throwing :) It seemed like Carl was over for about an hour but when we went inside to take a break we noticed 4 hours had gone by!!! Like they say... Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

That just gave me an idea for a bumper sticker...

"If Steel is Flying, You're Having Fun!" :)))

THROWZINI THROWING PARTY
On a side note, I'm having the 1st Throwzini Throwing Party on Sept. 14th, from 10am - 2pm. It's not going to be a competition, (but I'm sure a few will take place :) but more of an introduction to the sport for some friends of mine who haven't had the pleasure yet.

Chuck Fogarty, who we've featured many articles from, will be attending and helping me teach anyone who is interested how to throw knives, hawks, stars, spikes, spears, cards and any other pointy things we can get our hands on!

So if there's anyone near Milwaukee, WI who wants to come by and throw, just drop me an email and I'll fill you in on the details and directions.

A GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION
Here's a blast from the past...
Do you remember reading about a Combat Run for knife throwers? (Issues 7 and 8.) Or what about my visit with the "Guru of Recreational Knife Throwing", John Bailey?

I was at Johns place when I threw a bayonet into a grapefruit from about 30 feet away! A totally lucky throw. But best of all was that I had a witness to vouch for the "toss of a lifetime"! :) (take a look at Issue 44 for more details and pics from my trip to the Bailey ranch.)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

MY 1/2 SPIN TECHNIQUE - WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
by Roy Hutchison

Part 3 of 4

... My method on 1 1/2 spins was to still retain the visual distance as I did in the 1/2 spin, but to visually divide it by 3, and throw the knife as if the target were only a third of the actual distance away. This proved to be good and some encouraging results were obtained. Providing the floor was clear between me and the target.

I would stand facing the target, distance unimportant. Then I would look at the target, lower my gaze to the floor, pick a "third of distance spot" and fix my eyes on it. Then I'd raise my knife to throw at that spot, by the proven half spin method.

At this point I put my eyesight back on the target with the knife now coming forward for the throw...

I did practice this method for a few months, because if mastered, it would have opened up a new world! But I ran into some problems that had no answer. I found that it was "knife choosey" because error was multiplied by 3. (3 half spins equal 1 1/2 spins... just incase I lost ya :)

I had problems with gauging the third distance if there were objects on the ground in the throwing area.

It also required figuring out each throw which by now I was getting fed up with. And my stick rate was suffering because I was trying to jump forward too fast. So eventually I stuck to the half spin.

I did try "no spin" throwing but I found it impossible with any sort of proper knives or with throwing knives beyond about 6 feet.

I believe there are some gadgets made that are capable of no spin throws, but in my opinion, knife throwing should be done with knives. (Or at least something that resembles a knife.) It is also my opinion that "no spin" gadget throwing has no practical purpose. But this is only my opinion.

I include spikes in this statement because spikes are not knives, and I do throw spikes for practice purposes. I can also throw a "no spin" for a considerable distance just for fun - underhand only. The stick rate is about 70% at just over 12 feet.

Underhand half spins with knives is fun too. Some very long distances can be thrown and the longer the blade the better. Just let the knife slide from your hand.

At the age of 34 I started my own engineering company and continued to beat the heck out of any wooden objects about the factory (and a few that weren't wood) much to the amusement of business friends who thought I was a lunatic.

So there it is then... I may be the only toolroom knife thrower around :)

Since I discovered The Great Throwzini Web Site, a whole new world has opened up to me that I never knew existed. Friends are emailing me from everywhere asking about my half spin technique and I'm thinking that if there are many throwers out there, they would probably be throwing the same style. But I've only been contacted by a few who are "half spinning".

I am writing this small essay so as to give an insight into the extent of time spent on this method by me. This doesn't mean that all will have to spend a similar amount of time, its just that I was in no hurry and did not consider that I was learning anything. I just threw knives about and got better at it.

Although I do think that for it to come naturally, it will take a couple of years to see some results even with daily practice. I can't speak from experience but it will probably speed things up if you stick to one type of knife.

I used to throw anything, which is much more difficult because of the varying weights and sizes

Part 4 of 4 Continued in our next issue.

4. UNUSUAL OFFICE THROWERS
by Ben Holland

I know that some of your readers have used letter openers for throwers, but I have found a nice little item that I like even better.

I construct a shuriken out of 4 "T-Pins".

I found that the head of a T-Pin has a little gap in it where the wire has been bent backwards to make the head. This gap is roughly triangular and will barely accommodate the body of another T pin.

By putting the body of T-Pin 1 into the head of T-Pin 2, the body of T-Pin 2 into the head of T-Pin 3, the body of T-Pin 3 into the head of T-Pin 4 and the body of T-Pin 4 back into the head of T-Pin 1, you complete a little square. (Don't worry there are pictures to go along with this :-)

Shove all four pins at once down the shaft of each pin (careful, these things are mean) and you wind up with a "plus sign shaped thing" that has a sharpened point at the end of each arm.

These do stick nicely into cubical walls, but wait until the boss is not around to hear the tiny "THUNK". And by all means, don't accidentally leave one stuck in a picture of your boss' face on your cube wall... You live and learn.

Enjoy!
