In this issue we have a great article about the latest knife throwing event in Austin, TX sent in by one of the competitors. GUEST COLUMN: RESULTS FROM THE CENTRAL US CHAMPIONSHIPS EVENT by Carl Geddes As you all know the tournament in Austin, TX was held from December 20-22. Mike Bainton choose those dates so his students could attend. Mike always thinks of his students first! When we first arrived Mike took us to his karate studio to meet his students. They were all lined up and sitting on the floor when we (Lee Fugatt, Burl Carl and I) walked in. Mike gave a brief command to Master Michael Snowden, a 6th degree Black Belt who is just 21 years old, and the students sprang to their feet and greeted us with a "HI" Mike then asked a little 9 year old girl to show us her "forms." I started to get tears in my eyes at the discipline and intensity this little girl expressed. It was then I realized I was witnessing something much more important than a knife throwing tournament. For the next two days, I was humbled by the children. All the kids addressed us as sir or ma'am. They addressed each other as sir or ma'am. The respect they show each other and strangers was a very pleasant experience. Many of Mike's kids have "problems" but you sure couldn't tell that when they are at the studio. These kids will be the next leaders of Texas! I had the privilege of teaching a tomahawk throwing seminar to the kids and it was one on the most rewarding things I can remember doing in my life. The kids were great. And although not everyone was able to stick the tomahawks, they all gave 100% ALL THE TIME! No slouches in that group of kids! All of Mike's kids do chores at home to help the family and get at least a 90% in school. He and his other Sensei's are building the future leaders of our country and teaching them things like, honor, respect and responsibility. To see so many people in one place with high moral values is truly inspiring. I know I "preach" to everyone, whether you think you're a good thrower or not, to attend knife throwing tournaments. The reason is simple. It's not the knife throwing that's important, although Jim Tanner is certainly a very fine champion, it's much more than knife throwing. Mike's kids blew me away. What a special group of people! I made new friends like Joe Darrah, Andrew Crocker, Roya Williamson, and many others. In addition, I renewed camaraderie with Lee, Mike, Burl, John and others. Knife throwing is all about people! Knife throwing tournaments will enrich your life. The Central US Championships renewed my faith in the youth of America. When I left Texas I was on cloud nine. The next tournament will be the PKT in Las Vegas so check the throwers group for dates and times. BE THERE!
