1. WHAT'S NEW

Hi Throwers!

Well, I knew it was coming and it finally happened. The worst possible thing you could imagine... I woke up yesterday and had to scrape the ice off of my car windows :-) So, needless to say, there won't be much outdoor throwing going on for a little while. But rest assured, any days above 35-40F that I can get a fire going and throw a few, I'll BE doing it!

Then again, Joe Darrah (all around "throwing guru") is heading this way in the next day or so and will be stopping over to hang out and "talk knives" so we'll probably end up in the basement throwing the small stuff at my 2X4 targets!

Since some of us will have to head indoors to throw for a few months, I was hoping to find some good pictures and descriptions of things people like to throw indoors, or even existing "indoor" target ranges. We have to spread the knowledge people! :-)

So if you have a story, pictures or anything related to indoor throwing that you would like to share with everyone, just email it to sgracia@wi.rr.com. Thanks!

As usual there are a few other things to mention so lets get to them...

UPCOMING EVENTS
The 8th Annual Pacific Knife Throwers/Wild West Arts Club International Championships are scheduled for March 1-4, 2004 at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on the strip in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 1st of March will be set up and practice. The 2nd will be the qualifying and the main accuracy events and more. The 3rd will be the specialty events and the Banquet. The 4th is informal range time and sport. More details to come shortly!

Please email me directly with your mailing address if you would like an event package to be sent in the next month. No need if you came last year as they will go out automatically (unless your address has changed).

See you there!

2. GUEST COLUMN:

GERMAN THROWERS MEETING 2003
by Christian Thiel

At the last weekend of August, we had our third annual Big Throwers Meeting at the "Little Big Horse Ranch" near Berlin, Germany. The weather was nice, it made a break from the mad summer heat for us, and so about 30 throwers from all over Germany and other European countries showed up to compete and have fun.

Many brought their whole families with them as supporters. This set the atmosphere for the whole meeting: everybody was really having fun throwing at the training targets scattered in the area, and chatting with fellow throwers. Some stayed on site for two nights in original red-indian round-huts (newly constructed), creating together with the meals from the open fire a camp-like feeling.

Six events were being held, three for each knives and axes: short, middle, and distance event. In the short and middle events, only minimum distances are set, and one has a total of 21 throws, three at each of the seven tree rounds set up as targets.

The target circle has a diameter of 50cm (20"), and we award from 1 to 4 points for a stick here. The goal in the distance event is to stick the tool from as far away as possible, three tries from each distance allowed, if you stick it you can go further back.

Here we had new records: Holzf, ller Jack stood at 16.09 meters (thats about 52 feet!), and just planted the axe! Philippe Catania from Corsica had to be persuaded to try, but stuck the knife from the enormous distance of 11.30 meters (about 37 feet!). The results for all events can be found in the Sticking Point database and under the more detailed report on our web page:

The most exciting thing at the meeting was the foundation of the first European Throwing Club. On Sunday, the fourteen founding members from France and Germany finally agreed on the club rules and the name: "European Throwing Club Flying Blades (Eurothrowers)".

The goal of the club is to network axe and knife throwers throughout Europe and to assist in organising events. Additionally, the public shall be informed about the sport. At the moment, there is work in progress to be officially registered as a club in Germany, and after that, Eurothrowers.org is ready to accept new members.

I would like to thank all the people who made this meeting such a success, especially the team from the LBH-Ranch around Christian Prestin. Next year, we would like to hold the Big Throwers Meeting in another European country, so anyone interested in staging the event please contact us!
