1. WHAT'S NEW

Hi Folks!

I finally got out to throw last weekend! I got a call from my buddy Dave Fettig and also from a guy named Craig B. who said he'd always wanted to learn how to throw, so we set it up for Saturday. The day arrived and it was still pretty chilly outside, and muddy, and windy, but the snow was gone and the Sun was almost out, so that was good enough for us :-)

I hadn't really thrown any knives since last October when I went to Pennsylvania. So I was pleasantly surprised when I actually started "putting knives where I wanted them" after only a few warm up rounds. Dave and Craig were also doing great! After about 10 minutes of instruction from Dave and I, Craig started sticking 4 out of 5 knives! (BRING ON THE "THUNK!" :-)

Before we went out to throw, we watched David Adamovich's instructional video for a bit so I'm sure that helped us all too. If you're interested in learning from one of the "Greats" then I highly recommend you pick up ThrowDini's video. You'll learn EVERYTHING you need to know about knives, hawks, grips, stances, throwing, making corrections and you'll even get to see a bunch of superb stunt throws at the end!

2. GUEST COLUMN:

MY THROWING KNIFE CHEST
by K. E. Sackett

The title of this essay says something important: Throwing knives, tomahawks, cleavers, spikes, shuriken, and other throwing weapons should always be stored securely in a box or chest, to keep them out of the hands of uninstructed children and, more importantly, irresponsible grownups.

But after I've fixed up a foot locker or tool chest with a padlock, and after I've lined the inside generously with lightly oiled cloths for padding, what will I keep in it besides throwing weapons?

Most important will be a common seven-inch flat file with a good handle. This is a necessary tool for smoothing the nicks and burrs that always appear on hard-used throwing knives. Just occasionally (not often, I hope) I'll need it for reshaping a blunted or broken point.

Next comes a can of plain old Three-in-One oil. When wiping knives down before putting them away, I'll lightly dampen my cloth with oil, to loosen dirt, dried sweat, and any beginnings of the "Demon Rust".

Along with the oil will go a small bottle of leather dressing, to treat the handles of those knives that have leather scales. Bet you never thought of taking care of that leather, did you? Bet you wondered why those handles got frowzy so fast, too. And of course if any of my knives or hawks have leather scabbards, I'll need to keep those clean and polished too, now won't I?

How about wiping cloths? Any old thing will do, you say? Ye-es, I suppose, but along with the usual worn-out tee shirts and discarded towels, I think I'll throw in a generous piece of rough denim or canvas, for scrubbing steel and for scouring tomahawk handles that have fallen on damp ground.

Speaking of tomahawk handles, I think I'd better include a bit of linseed oil in my box of tricks; eight ounces in an old mustard jar, tightly closed, will last a long time. I'll apply it sparingly to the wood, after a vigorous wipe-down with that denim or canvas. Then I'll rub the oil in well before putting my hawks away, and they'll stay nice and shiny for Rendezvous.

4. HOW TO CREATE A DAMASCUS LOOK ON YOUR THROWERS
by Frank Ragu

If you have a thrower that has the shiney metal finish on the blade and you want to spruce it up a bit, just wipe mayonnaise and lemon on the blade. Then wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 days.

The end result will be a finish that looks to be Damascus. It will eventually wear off, in maybe a year.
