2. GUEST COLUMN:

CHEAP THROWING HAWKS
By John Craggs

The other day I saw some cheap and reasonably robust looking hatchets on a market stall (UK), very similar to the one I'd had some fun throwing until the handle split. At only three pounds (price, not weight) they seem too good to be true so I only bought one to see if it's up to the job.

The stall holder says he's selling them as fast as he can get them, but supply is pretty reliable. If it does the job well enough I'll buy myself another half a dozen and have a set of seven matched axes for œ21, (about $40 dollars in round figures).

It weighs a pound and a half with a handle just a whisker under 14.5" and it stuck second time with a gentle lob for a half spin underarm throw at about 12 feet. (This thrown with the edge facing backwards at the start). After a few minutes I moved back for full spins, starting with the edge facing forwards. Yet again, nice solid sticks nearly every time.

The only problem with the edge forward throws is the shape of the handle. Because this axe is sold for chopping - not throwing - there is a contoured bulge on the end for security of grip. This tends to make it flick up during release compared to the edge backwards throws.

Rather than adapt my style I'm going to take a spokeshave to the handle and 'optimise' it for a smooth release. Once I'm happy I'll be back for the rest of the set.

The handles look like Ash rather than Hickory, but the way I see it I can't really lose. Even if they fail and I have to re-handle the lot (possibly with something a little longer and straighter) I'm still getting seven very usable axe heads for my money!

Throwing tomahawks is an awesome way to spend a few hours or even an entire day if the "throwing gods" are smiling down upon you :-) Throwing full spins, half spins, cutting playing cards outlined by rubber bands, and of course, trying to crack your targets in half from 3 full spins... now THESE are fun things to do with tomahawks! :-)

4. ANOTHER HAPPY CUSTOMER
by Josh Ellison

I just wanted to write to let you know I received my SKS Throwing Spikes in the mail this weekend, and wanted to say THANK YOU. These have the most natural balance of anything I've EVER thrown (and if it can be thrown, I've probably thrown it at some point...).

I'm 6'3", 250, and these are one of the few things I have thrown that I can really put all of my power behind without worrying about damage to the throwing object itself. I was able to penetrate these all the way through a «" piece of particle board, and the ¬" piece of high compression fiberboard I have behind it!

It basically felt like throwing a knife, but having the effect of throwing a sledgehammer! AMAZING! Thank you so much, as I've only had them for 24 hours and I've already enjoyed them immensely!

Sincerely,

Josh Ellison
Colorado
