Custom Spears
From Larry Hood

Submitted By Scott Gracia

Lee Fugatts 3.5' spear
These designs were all made by a custom maker in California named Larry Hood. The designs we were testing were the 1 second from the top, and the one at the very bottom of the picture. (Thanks a bunch Larry!)

Lighter spears definitely require more finesse and less power in the beginning. (The spears looked like wounded ducks flailing thru the air our first few throws :-)

We started from about 12 feet but by the end of the day we were sailing them into the target from about 24 feet. Not much for accuracy but they were sticking. Since it was the first time throwing them, I tried not to be greedy. (Baby steps :-)

Their light weight made them a bit more difficult to get to fly 'straight'. But after calming down and concentrating on keeping everything 'in line' and a smooth throw and release, they started sticking pretty deep into the target!

This is my buddy Scott Bryan (the guy with 2 first names). Since I no longer have a throwing range, he decided we should put one up at his place... and I agreed whole heartedly! As you can see by the look on his face, he was feeling quite pleased with his progress :-)

'The weight is 9oz, and 65" length. The shaft is high strength graphite fiber tapered tubing (two golf club shafts spliced back-to-back with epoxy and a 6" tapered hardwood dowel). The adapter is a 1/4" brass pipe segment. The spear point is a modified throwing knife of high carbon stainless soldered to the pipe. Not quite as rugged as the UT-100, but with reasonable care will last as long.' - Larry Hood

I never did much spear throwing in the past but so far I'm having a great time doing it. I always go back to throwing my knives, but its a nice break from the norm and keeps the throwing interesting and fun!
